Mainline Health Highlights - December 2025

Welcome to the December edition of our healthcare newsletter! As the year comes to a close and the holiday season begins, we're focusing on staying healthy, managing holiday stress, and making the most of your health benefits before they reset in the new year.

Staying Safe and Healthy During Peak Illness Season

Winter is here, bringing with it colder weather and a higher risk of seasonal illnesses like the flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Protecting yourself and your loved ones is crucial for an enjoyable holiday season.

Key Prevention Tips
  • Prioritize Vaccinations: Ensure you and your family are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations, especially for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV (for eligible individuals, such as those over 60).
  • Practice Impeccable Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer generously when soap and water aren't available.
  • Boost Your Immune System: Support your body with consistent sleep (7–8 hours per night), balanced nutrition, and adequate hydration.
  • Stay Home When Sick: If you develop symptoms of an illness, stay home to prevent spreading germs to others.
  • Improve Ventilation: When hosting indoor gatherings, ensure good airflow or opt for smaller groups to reduce transmission risk.

Managing Holiday Stress and Mental Well-Being

The holiday season can bring complex emotions, including excitement, joy, but also significant stress and anxiety. The reduced sunlight during winter months can also contribute to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), making mental health a top priority.

Tips for a Healthier Mind
  • Set Boundaries: It's okay to say no to some events or obligations. Don't overcommit yourself.
  • Prioritize Sleep: Adequate rest is critical for both physical health and stress management.
  • Stay Active: Even a short walk or light exercise can boost your mood and help manage stress.
  • Seek Support: If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a healthcare provider or a licensed counselor. Many telehealth options are available for convenient mental health support.
  • Focus on Connection: While holiday stress can be isolating, focus on meaningful connections with family and friends.

Maximizing Your Year-End Health Benefits

Many health insurance plans, FSAs (Flexible Spending Accounts), and deductibles operate on a calendar year basis and reset on January 1. This means you may have benefits or funds that need to be used by December 31.

End-of-Year Checklist
  • Review Your Deductible: If you have already met your annual deductible, now is an excellent time to schedule needed appointments, screenings, or procedures to save on out-of-pocket costs.
  • Check FSA/HSA Funds: Verify if your Flexible Spending Account funds have a "use it or lose it" policy. Use these pre-tax dollars for eligible expenses like dental care, vision appointments, or medical supplies before the deadline. Health Savings Account (HSA) funds typically roll over.
  • Schedule Preventive Care: Make time for annual physicals, blood pressure screenings, cholesterol checks, and age-appropriate cancer screenings.
  • Order Prescriptions/Supplies: Ensure you have enough medication refills and stock up on medical supplies if your benefits are expiring.

Don't let your hard-earned benefits go to waste. Contact your healthcare provider or insurance plan administrator to understand your specific benefits coverage before the year ends.
